This week

 

 

May 20th-May24th, 2013

 

The Spring Concert, Ice Cream Social, and the Book Fair will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd at St. Bernard School.  The afternoon performance will begin at 1:00 pm.  The evening performance will begin at 6:30 pm followed by the Ice Cream Social and Book Fair.  The doors will open 30 minutes before the concert.

The Book Fair will also continue on Thursday

 

Math:  We are continuing to focus on telling time to 5 minute intervals.  We will work on elapsed time, solving problems using time, reading a calendar, and telling time using hours, days, weeks, and months.

 

Phonics:  We will review the chapter on suffixes and inflectional endings. We will review doubling final consonants and dropping silent e before adding endings. We will change y to i before adding endings and review suffixes. 

 

Reading: The selection is Red, White, and Blue.  It is a non-fiction story on the history of the American Flag.  The vocabulary words are: America, birthday, flag, freedom, nicknames, stars, stripes, answer, company, faraway, parents, picture, school, and wash.  The skills are reviewing doubling final consonants and dropping silent e before adding endings, identifying fact and opinion, and main idea.

 

Spelling:  The pattern is words that change spelling before adding endings. The test will be Friday, May 24th. The words are: tried, planned, liked, hiked, cried, skipped, trying, planning, liking, hiking, crying, skipping, danced, replied, dancing, replying.

 

Religion:  We will begin the Lures program and read and discuss the Gospel forThe Most Holy Trinity Sunday.

May 13th - May 17th, 2013

 

The children should wear their gym uniforms on Tuesday for a special activity.

If your child brings 1 or 2 bottles for the Pick-A-Pop Booth on Wednesday, May 15th and Friday, May 17th, he/she may dress down that day.

Please remember to return spring pictures or the money as soon as possible, also the field trip permission form and money.

 

Math:  We started the unit on Time. We will review telling time to the hour and half-hour. Then we will begin telling time to 5 minute intervals and quarter hours.

 

Phonics: We are learning about comparative and superlative adjectives and forming a word where the ending needs to change.

 

Reading:  The selection is Just Like Josh Grogan.  The concept is traditions.  A little girl in the 1930's who wants to play baseball like the boys.  The vocabulary words are bases, cheers, field, plate, sailed, threw, guess, pretty, science, shoe, village, watch, won.

 

Spelling:  The pattern is  contractions. The test is Friday, May 17th.  The words are can't, don't, he'd, I'd, I've, she'd, they'd, they're, we're, we've, won't, you're, could've, would've, should've.

 

Religion:  We will begin the Lures Program from the Archdiocese of Hartford.  We we will learn about Mary, The Mother of the Church and read and discuss the Gospel for Pentecost.  Please wear red to Mass on Pentecost Sunday for the Holy Spirit.

May 5th, - May 10th, 2013

 

The children did beautifully on Saturday. Watching the children receive their First Holy Communiom is a joy-filled experience. I hope they will always hunger for the Bread of Life. 

 

There will be an early release on Tuesday(12:45 pm).

 

The second grade will be reading during the Mass of the Lord's Ascension on Thursday, May 9th at 10:00 am in the gym.

 

Math:  We are still working on division using the Hershey's Kisses.

 

Reading:  The selection is The Signmaker's Assistant.  The vocabulary words are afternoon, blame, idea, important, signmaker, townspeople, behind, brought, door, everybody, minute, promise, sorry.

 

Spelling: The pattern is words with au, al, and aw.  The test will be Friday, May 10th.  The words are August, auto, because, caught, chalk, draw, fault, launch, talk, taught, thaw, walk, applause, audience, awkward.

 

Religion:  We will be practicing the readings and petitions for Mass on Thursday and discuss the Concluding Rite of Mass.

April 29th - May 3rd, 2013

 

Monday:  We will be visiting St. Bernard Church to see and learn about the sacred vessels, linens, and the priest's vestments.  If there is time,  we will practice for First Communion. We will be leaving school at 12:45 pm and returning at 2:30 pm.

 

Reading words are: adventure, climbed, clubhouse, exploring, greatest, truest, wondered, bought, people, pleasent, probably, scared, shall, sign.

 

Wednesday:  There will be a rehersal for First Communion on Wednesday, May 1st at St. Bernard Church at 4:00 pm with Father Melnick.  All children must attend.  Father will begin promply at 4:00 pm.  The length of this practice will depend on how well the children do.  It usually takes an hour.

 

Wednesday is also Grandparents/Special Persons Day.

 

Friday: On Friday, May 3rd, there will be a spelling test. The pattern is words with gh, ph, and ff. The words are: cliff, cough, enough, giraffe, graph, laugh, phone, photo, puff, rough, stuff, tough, dolphin, physical, autograph.

 

Saturday:  The children will come into Fitzmaurice Hall between 12:30 pm and 12:45 pm.  Please make sure they use the bathroom before they sit down.  I do not want any issues with their clothes.  The Mass will begin promptly at 1:00 pm.  Father does not wait for anyone who is late.  Please do not wave or try to get your child's attention when they are around the altar or after they receive the Eucharist.  They will be praying and thanking God for this truly great sacrament.  After the Mass, the children will go back to Fitzmaurice Hall to receive their certificates.  The certificates will be in alphabetical order. After they receive their certificate they may leave with you.  If I had to say how long the Mass will be, I would say about an hour.

April 22nd - April 26th, 2013

 

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful vacation.

On Wednesday, April 24th, we will be attending Benediction in the school gym at 1:00 pm.

The Open House and Curriculum Fair is April 25th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

There is a dressdown day on Friday, April 26th for the Pick-a-Pop booth.  If your child brings in 2 bottles, they may dress down on Friday.  Please see the Pick- a- Pop notice under weekly backpack for more information. 

 

Math:  We will begin learning about division by sharing Hershey's Kisses equally.

 

Phonics:  We will review forming plural nouns with s or es and adding ed and ing to words where the last consonant is doubled or the silent e is dropped.  We will begin to learn about suffixes ful, less, and ness.

 

Reading:  The selection this week is Bad Dog, Dogger! It is a fictional story about the responsibility of training a dog. The skills are reading words with consonant digraphs kn, wr, mb, gn; identifying theme and plot; and reviewing prefixes pre, un, re, dis.  The vocabulary words are chased, chewing, dripping, grabbed, practice, treat, wagged, above, ago, enough, toward, whole, word.

 

Spelling:  The pattern is words with digraphs mb, gn, kn, wr.

The test will be Friday, April 26th.  The words are climb, comb, gnat, knee, knob, knock, lamb, sign, wrap, wren, write, wrong, knuckle, plumber, wrestle.

 

Religion:  We will review the priest's vestment, the sacred vessels, and linens used at Mass.  We will attend Benediction on Wednesday and read and discuss the Gospel for the 5th Sunday of Easter.  We will also begin practicing for our First Communion Mass.  Remember, there is a rehersal on Wednesday, May 1st at 4:00 pm at St. Bernard Church with Fr. Melnick.  All children must attend and parents may stay.   The length of this rehersal will depend on how well the children remember what they are expected to do.
