General Information
St. Bernard School fields multiple basketball teams - boys/girls and varsity/junior varsity. Practices begin in early October. Regular season games are usually scheduled from mid-November until February, with playoffs often extending into March. Our teams play in a variety of leagues - Hartford, Manchester, and Enfield CYO.  Practices are scheduled by the coaches and take place in the St. Bernard School gym. Please note that there are no games or practices if there is inclement weather, or if the school was closed on that day for any reason.

Grades, Faith and Behavior
Grades and schoolwork are important. A “C” average or better is required to play. Please see the Student Handbook for more information on academic probation. In addition, all coaches and players are expected to act in a way that displays Christian beliefs and demeanor. No bad language or disrespect is allowed. We aim to play hard but also fairly and with Christian ideals. There are codes of conduct for coaches, players and spectators per the Office of Catholic Schools. Adherence by all is required or players/coaches will be subject to dismissal from activities.

The Program
Players will learn basic dribbling, defense, proper shooting skills, passing, body positioning, man-to-man and zone defenses. Players learn offensive plays and have several defenses. Teamwork and sportsmanship are paramount to everything. Students also go through conditioning drills.

Volunteers
We can always use parents to volunteer to run the clocks, score and help with the concession stand during games.  Varsity players will be required to volunteer for one 4-hour shift.  To volunteer, please contact the coaches.

Cost

Once selected for the team, there is a fee of about $145 for each child.

Age Requirements

Each new player must provide a copy of their birth certificate. Each JV child must not be 13 by December 31st each season to play grade 5-6 JV basketball.  Varsity and girls have different age maximums (not 15 by December 31st).
